Using .Mac’s iWeb to Build and Host a website on a Macintosh

January 2, 2009

Thinking about building a website on your Mac using iWeb and .Mac ?

There are two ways to get iWeb in order to build a website on a Mac. You can either purchase a new Mac which comes with iLife (which comes with iWeb) or you can buy the iLife disc directly from Apple. This is the screen you see when you login to iWeb.
iweb1

It’s not necessary to have access to a .Mac account to use iWeb, Apple upsells purchasing .Mac to make iWeb’s website building features work better.

For those who have made a website before, it’s clear that using iWeb to build a website is quite limiting. iWeb isn’t designed for professional web developers. It’s made for beginners who don’t want or need the flexibility required to build a professional website.

If you’re looking at other mac website builder software or hosting solutions, be sure to determine your short and long term goals for your website / business and make sure the solution you choose meets those
needs.

While using the iWeb and .Mac will allow you to create and host a website, there are better, more flexible mac website builder and mac web host solutions available.

Picking a Local, National or Overseas Mac Web Host Company

December 31, 2008

All reputable web hosting companies will meet standard hosting requirements no matter what country they’re in. However, this doesn’t mean all Mac website hosting companies are equal.
When you’re searching for a reputable Mac friendly hosting company this significantly narrows the options and number of hosting companies you can choose from.

It’s often the case overseas companies (in India, for example) can offer services and hosting packages for rates lower than you might find in, say, Canada, USA, UK or Australia. Lower overhead and staffing costs can make this possible.
While you may be tempted to sign up with a cheaper overseas company instead of a local or national host for your website hosting, consider all of the angles before you jump in.

  • Will you be receiving the same level of quality
  • Will you receive adequate support
  • Are there any language/cultural barriers that may hinder verbal or written communicaion?
  • What is the time zone difference and does it work with your schedule?
  • The farther away the host server is from your customers the slower your website may load. It simply takes longer for the information (words, pictures, video, etc) to travel a longer distance.
  • Will technical support be available
  • Will sales or customer support be available
  • Will help files / resources be available in your language?

We don’t suggest avoiding overseas companies –there are a number of great ones out there. Simply make sure you consider all of the facts and choose a Mac hosting company that best suits your unique needs.

Mac Hosting Q&A: Advantages of Hosting on a Macintosh Server

December 29, 2008

Q: What are the advantages of hosting a website on a Macintosh Server?

A: Great Mac Software
Macintosh web software is easy to use and the learning curve isn’t steep.

Security
The Macintosh platform is more secure than any other platform. In test after test, hackers have been

specifically employed to crack into a Macintosh server; they have met with no success. Further, the very file system that Macintosh uses prevents a hacker from cracking the tree structure at all. Without that rather important piece of information, it is impossible for the hacker to get into the system and even begin to do damage. For example, in an effort to increase security, the US Army has switched from Windows NT to a Mac server

URL Case
On a Macintosh Server, unlike most other web servers, URLs are case insensitive. For example, if someone mistakenly types in a capital letter in a URL, a Mac server will still display the proper URL. ie the URL http://www.mydomainname/Mac.html and http://www.mydomainname.com/mac.html will both work on a Mac server regardless of whether users type in a capital M or not.
